Real-Life Decision Making

For nannies, what may seem like simple decisions to logical, everyday problems can easily turn into a battle of wills between the nanny and child.

Experienced nanny Nick Mitchell, who cares for the children of two families, says, "Deciding if children should go to bed may seem like an obvious decision, but it's one that every parent and nanny faces daily."

Mitchell explains that it's common for children to want to stay up as late as they can, but nannies know children need plenty of rest. Without sufficient sleep, children are tired and grumpy the following day.

"Unfortunately," says Mitchell, "young children do not understand that they need to go to sleep, and bedtime battles often result."

You are a nanny. The children have been well behaved today. They ask if they can stay up past bedtime.
