Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You redirect the blame.

You walk up to the podium with your notes in hand. During the media conference, questions are raised about the competency of the airplane fuelers that were recently hired by the airport. You say you didn't know about the accident-prone past of the fueling company before you hired them.

Another reporter asks who was responsible for hiring the new fuelers. The lump in your throat has returned. You take a long sip of water before you answer the question. You look straight into the reporter's eyes and say many people were involved in the hiring process and the blame cannot and should not be placed on any one individual. You feel you gave a good and safe answer.

Even though you didn't have the final say in the hiring process, you are still held responsible if something goes wrong. The next day you are called into the office of upper management. They inform you that they will not be extending your contract and that the airport is letting you go immediately.

After they fire you, upper management decides to issue a press release saying that you were responsible for recommending the fuelers, so the airport took corrective measures to fix this problem by terminating both you and the fueling company.

Mangerial positions will always involve decisions of all kinds. Three come immediately to mind for airport manager Donna Fraser: "Purchasing decisions, budget decisions and staffing."
