Real-Life Decision Making

Promotions in the airline industry are based on merit and seniority. Most new baggage handlers start on the ramp. Their duties are loading cargo on and off the airplane, cabin preparation and cabin cleaning or "grooming."

If you want to move indoors to the baggage sorting area inside the airport, you have to apply or bid on any jobs that come up. The same applies if you want to get into the customer service side of baggage handling.

Imagine you're an airline employee with three years' seniority. An inside job at the customer service desk becomes available. You would like to move indoors and you like the idea of being able to track down lost luggage, but you are a little intimidated at the thought of dealing directly with the occasional irate passenger. You have a good employment record and enough seniority that if you bid on the job, you may get it. What do you do?
