Log scalers have to pass on what they find in an accurate and clear manner. Otherwise, the information they work so hard to gather will be virtually useless.

Today, many log scalers are equipped with hand-held computers that can store and analyze data. But most scalers do much of that work themselves.

Draft a memo to your boss about the proposed timber sale you just finished scaling. According to your measurements, the sale includes:

$8,000 worth of veneer oak (4,000 board feet)
$4,000 worth of Grade 2 oak (4,000 board feet)
$2,500 worth of lumber grade hemlock (1,000 board feet)
$2,000 worth of lumber grade pine (850 board feet)

Total: $16,500 worth of lumber

You also want to let the landowner know that it may be worth his while to split the sale into several smaller sales, selling each component to a mill that specializes in that type of wood.
