Real-Life Math

Your theater company is putting on a historical drama called Ghouls and Graveyards for Halloween. You will be performing the play at several schools in the area.

As a dramaturg, you are trying to make sure that the props and sets used in the play are accurate to the time period of the play. The play was written in the 1950s.

"Dramaturgs don't have to use math on a daily basis," says dramaturg Denis Johnston. "It's not a regular part of the job. But there are certain plays that may deal with physics, evolution and numbers. Then the dramaturg has to use math to make sure what happens on the stage is accurate."

In one scene, a man drinks a green concoction that turns him into a ghoul. By reading about early productions of the play, you have discovered what ingredients were used to make the mixture. It is an unusual drink, but you are pleased to be able to recreate it exactly. The ghoul drink:

1 3/4 cups chopped avocado
1 teaspoon vinegar
2 cups water
1/2 packet yellow food coloring

Remember:
1 whole avocado = 1 cup chopped avocado

The company is going to put on the play two times per day for five days.

  1. How many avocados do you suggest the theater buy for these performances?
  2. How many packets of yellow food coloring should be purchased?
