Real-Life Math

There's good news for aspiring film critics with mathaphobia: "In terms of the actual job of being a film critic, no, there's no math involved," says Dan Kois. He's a freelance film reviewer for Village Voice and the Washington Post, among other publications.

But there are times when some basic math can come in handy. For example, let's say you're at a film festival and you need to screen and write reviews for 10 films. It's Sunday morning, and the reviews are due on Friday morning.

You have 10 movies to see, each three hours long. It usually takes you just as long to write and research your review. Assuming you need eight hours of sleep each night, can you do it in time?
