Fingerprint experts rely on computers for much of their work. Computers can help search millions of stored fingerprints for potential matches. They can analyze individual fingerprints and even fill in missing parts of partial prints.

You are the director of the fingerprint program for the police department. You have been asked to update the computer system to allow digital storage of all 7,250 fingerprint samples. Your task is to prepare a budget for the computer purchase.

Here's what you know:

  • A single fingerprint is about 700,000 pixels in size. One print requires 0.5 megabytes of storage space.
  • Each sample includes a full set of prints, 5 from each hand.
  • The current cost of computer storage space is $0.25 per megabyte.

How much money do you need for your new computer system?
