Real-Life Communication

All types of people use libraries, but young people often need the most guidance. They typically have many questions. Where do I find periodicals? What do these numbers in the catalog mean?

You have been asked to speak to schoolchildren about your job.

What does a library technician do? Imagine your audience is a group of elementary-age students. Keep it brief -- 200 words or less.

For background, use the following information:

Library technicians play important roles on a library staff. They occupy positions between clerks and librarians.

Technicians support and assist librarians in many of the services offered by libraries. This includes computer software issues. The library technician helps with circulation, referencing, cataloging and other services.

  • Providing students and staff with information on the proper use of computerized and non-computerized library systems
  • Assisting students, teachers and administrators by answering routine reference questions and helping them locate material
  • Cataloging and processing new library materials
  • Ensuring resources are consistent with school library requirements
  • Maintaining library and circulation records such as overdue lists
  • Searching catalogs to determine the price and availability of materials
  • Maintaining a working knowledge of computer software and CD-ROMs
  • Providing information to students and staff on the proper use of audiovisual equipment
