Real-Life Communication -- Solution

With the rapid advances in the computerization of medical data, the question of the protection of medical records privacy has begun to arise, notes the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The prospect of an invasion of privacy is quite real when large amounts of information are held in computer databases. This issue was just not as urgent when files were kept on paper.

Here are your lists:

Advantages of Medical Databases

  • Reduces paperwork
  • Helps with account balances
  • Helps prevent false claims
  • Makes information available to an attending doctor (for example, in an emergency room)
  • Allows researchers to track patients' responses to drugs
  • Allows researchers to follow diseases
  • Provides the means for better organization and legibility of files (none of that doctor scrawl!)

Disadvantages of Medical Databases

  • Some people fear that based on previous medical information, they could be turned down for insurance
  • May allow a large number of people illegitimate access to files
  • May be easier for someone to change or view information
  • Not everyone using this technology may agree upon a universal computer language

How to Keep Information Private

  • Passwords could be used on the computer systems
  • Tracking systems could be installed so a patient could see exactly who accessed the files
  • Doctors could tag a specific file to alert users of the sensitive information
  • Files could be kept the old-fashioned way, on paper
