Real-Life Math -- Solution

First you get out a piece of paper and sketch the scene.

""

Evaluate what you know:

  • The distance from the table to the wall is 8 feet
  • The angle at which the bullet entered the wall is 30 degrees

Using your trigonometry, you realize that you can solve for the height where the bullet started. You're going to use the equation:

Tan 30 degrees = b (opposite) / a (adjacent)
Tan 30 = b / 8
8 (Tan 30) = b
8 (0.577) = b
b = 4.61 feet

Now add 2 feet (because the bullet hit the wall at a height of 2 feet) to your 4.61feet for a total of 6.61. If the table was only 3.5 feet high, and the bullet started from a height of 6.61 feet, you know that there's a pretty good chance that Mr. Dyer lied about the circumstances of his wife's death.
