Real-Life Math -- Solution

If your client currently spends an average of 1,000 minutes a month on the phone, you recommend company A.

Company A
0.10 x 1000 =100
100 + 5 = $105
Company B
0.12 x 100 = $120

But if your client averages 200 minutes a month, you recommend company B:

Company A
0.10 x 200 = 20
20 + 5 = 25
Company B
0.12 x 200 = 24

With a $20 phone bill your service charge is 20 percent of your total bill.

Vice-president of telecommunications Laura Geery-Larson says basic math and accounting skills are helpful to have. "Because a lot of times you're balancing a budget," she says. "[There is] a lot of research, because there are a lot of offerings out there.

"Basic math should be plenty," Geery-Larson adds. "I mean, you're going to get percentages once you're looking at rates per minute, things like that."
