Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are measuring the arc of the wheel well in order to determine whether a new set of tires will fit on your race car.

The diameter of the wheel well is 80 cm. Put this into the formula C = Pi x d

Pi = 3.14
d = 80

C = 3.14 x 80

The circumference of the circle is 3.14 x 80 = 251.2

The wheel well is a semicircle, and so it is half the circumference of the circle.

251.2 / 2 = 125.6

The wheel well measures 125.6 cm. The tires only require a wheel well of 120 cm, so the new tires will fit this race car.

"The higher you rise within the sport, the much more specialized each position becomes," says Brett Goodman. He owns a racing academy. "And, yes, some of them require a high degree of math skills."
