Real-Life Math -- Solution

So, how much air is Clive's engine getting? Just put the values into the formula and determine the airflow.

Maximum airflow = (300 / 2) x (3,600 / 1,728) x 1.0
Maximum airflow = 150 x 2.08 x 1
Maximum airflow = 312 cubic feet

Simple as that! You've measured the airflow from the carburetor and have determined that the new one is providing a sufficient amount of air to the cylinders. Clive should now be getting good gas mileage and be running well. Mrs. Matthews is overjoyed, and both Clive and owner are restored to their usual happy selves.

Math is used all the time in automotive work.

"Somebody who excels in math will generally excel in fuel injection diagnostics. Fuel injection diagnostics are the wave of the future," says Doug Payette, an auto service manager.
