Real-Life Communication -- Solution

This is the list of the tools and equipment you need to complete the fuel pump job. Following the parts list is a summary of the procedure you need to follow.

Parts

  • Mechanical fuel pump
  • Fuel filter
  • Fuel pump pressure gauge
  • Graduated container
  • Fuel pump gasket
  • Pump outlet pipe
  • Inlet and vapor hoses
Procedure
  1. Repairs have to be made as a whole -- a complete refit is needed.
  2. Begin by checking the filter and the fuel pressure.
  3. Check the volume -- it should flow at one pint in 30 seconds.
  4. Cut the power to the pump for removal.
  5. Disconnect the inlet hose and the vapor return hose, loosen the fuel line and disconnect the outlet pipe.
  6. Mount a new gasket and fit the new pump in with the mounting bolts.
  7. Reconnect pipes and hoses and hook up the battery.

As you can see, it's at times like these that good communication skills are necessary. Not only do you have to read the manual, but you must also be able to interpret it.

You'll also have to put your technical knowledge into plain language. After all, the customer will want to know why he needs a brand new fuel pump. Likewise, you will have to talk with your co-workers, in discussing the problem or delegating work.
