Real-Life Math -- Solution

The tribal council is calculating whether they can afford to hire another nurse for the new health-care clinic. This is what you find:

First, calculate the full-time nurse's earnings:

$18 an hour x 40 hours a week x 52 weeks a year = $37,440

The nurse's full-time wages are $37,440.

Your budget is $55,000 per year.

$55,000 - $37,440 = $17,560

You have $17,560 to spend on the part-time nurse.

You also pay her $18 per hour.

$17,560 / $18 = 976 hours

You can afford to pay her for 976 hours in the year.

This is divided evenly over 52 weeks:

976 / 52 = 18.77

You can hire her to work 18.77 or approximately 18 hours per week at the clinic.
