Real-Life Communication

Understanding why things are as they are and how changes affect people is a crucial part of a sociologist's work. Communication between sociologists and the people they report their findings to is key. Here's a typical situation where communication plays a big part in how an agency goes about making changes.

In some cities, the way social agencies deal with child welfare is undergoing major changes. These changes will affect both the way people receive services and the way agencies deliver services. That means agency staff will have to change the way they do things.

As the sociologist who researched the situation and recommended the changes, how do you ensure the transition is smooth for everyone involved?

Previously, workers had four months to file a petition and 12 months to free a child. You now want the petitions out in 10 days. Use this information to write your own short memo to staff, outlining your goals and asking for support.
