Real-Life Math

You are the chief privacy officer for a company that has an e-commerce website.

Today, a company has approached you offering to add their ANON privacy feature to your software. You must analyze the impact this will have on your users and on your computer systems.

Their software is 275 MB in size. You have 100,000 users and each user will need to download the software to get the ANON feature.

Units:
1GB = 1 gigabyte = 1,024 MB
1 MB = 1 megabyte = 1,024 K
1 K = 1 kilobyte = 1,024 bytes

Technical note: Hard drive manufacturers often use 1,000 instead of 1,024 in the conversions above so their hard disks can be advertised as larger.

Questions:

  • How many additional gigabytes of Internet traffic will this feature generate on your servers if 75 percent of your users download the ANON feature?
  • If the partner wants $250,000 for the ANON feature and Internet traffic bandwidth costs $2 per GB, how much will this deal cost in total?
  • If the average user connects to the Internet with a connection that can transmit data at an average rate of 150,000 bytes per second, how long will it take the average user to download the new ANON feature?
