Insider Info

Bev London is a member of the Puppeteers of America. London says most puppeteers don't make their living from puppetry -- they hold down other jobs so that they can continue to do work in the field.

"Most puppeteers are struggling," says London, a puppeteer and teacher-librarian who runs a puppet club at an elementary school. "It's not an easy way to make a living. Cutbacks have affected the arts in many schools, which means they have less to spend on the performing arts."

People in the profession say the work is sporadic. You can expect your work as a puppeteer to be primarily contractual.

Earnings and employment information from the U.S. Department of Labor is not available for this field at this time.
