Real-Life Math

Every career requires math skills, some more than others.

A music video producer needs to know the basics.

You are to produce a 3 1/2 minute music video for an up-and-coming band within a budget of $5,000.

  • For every usable minute of film, 3 minutes will likely be shot.
  • Film roll ends at a discount production house cost $0.75 a foot.
  • A minute is about 400 feet of film.
  • The song for the video is about a love triangle, and if you decide to hire actors from the local theater school, each actor will have to be paid $100 an hour.
  • A director will cost you $150 an hour, unless you get a friend to do it for $120 an hour. The problem is, your friend's quality of work isn't great.

You feel you need to earn $800 from this project for it to be worth your while. What are your options? Can you afford to cut corners and, if so, where?
