Real-Life Math -- Solution

You must calculate how much rent each resident must pay per month.

Tom has worked (5 + 3 + 4)= 12 days.
At $5 a day, Tom owes 5 x 12 = $60.

Sandra has worked (6 + 3)= 9 days.
At $5 a day, she owes 5 x 9 = $45.

Adam has worked (6 + 6 + 5 + 5) = 22 days.
At $5 a day, Adam owes 22 x 5 = $110.
However, since $100 is the maximum, Adam actually owes $100.

George did not work at all, so he does not owe any rent.

"I don't do a great deal of mathematics at work," says Keith Baldwin. He is a residential counselor in a halfway house. "But I do have to calculate rents and often I help residents figure out their budget."
