Like many bodybuilders, you supplement your income by working as a personal trainer. You're advising a young man named Chad who is bodybuilding as a hobby.

Chad is considering using anabolic steroids. He says he knows all about the possible physical side-effects, but wants to do it anyway.

After talking to him, you realize he doesn't know anything about the psychological dangers of steroid use. He doesn't know how tough it is to stop once you start. "It's like going from a Corvette to a Porsche -- you don't want to go back," says bodybuilder and trainer Todd Schumlick.

Some possible psychological side-effects are:

  • Wide mood swings
  • Violent episodes known as "roid rages"
  • Bouts of depression when drugs are stopped
  • Impaired judgment stemming from feelings of invincibility
  • Paranoid jealousy, extreme irritability and delusions

Write down what you'll tell Chad. Make sure you sound understanding and not too bossy. You want to persuade him, not coerce him.
