Real-Life Math

Uh-oh. It looks like the actors will need a lot more practice if the current production is going to get off the ground. That means they will be spending more time on the stage.

"A stage manager must keep track of an actor's hours and warn the producer if overtime seems necessary," says stage manager Carissa Dollar.

Stage managers also need to use math for day-to-day activities such as measuring out floor space on the stage, figuring out rehearsal schedules and looking after props.

"We use basic math for things like estimating the number of perishable prop items needed for the run of a show," adds Dollar.

For a current play called Just Desserts, the main actor eats 4 cookies per play. The supporting actor eats 3 pastries. Obviously, these props have to be replaced for each show.

The play runs for 4 weekends, with 4 shows per weekend. There will also be 4 technical rehearsals of the play. How many cookies and pastries will you need to buy to complete the run of the show?
