Real-Life Communication

Officials at surfing associations say today's top professional surfers combine skills, talent and creativity on the water with a professional demeanor and attitude off the water. And leading that group of skills is the ability to communicate.

Professional surfers are always communicating with their fans and other surfers. Several magazines serve the surfing industry. TV stations cover big competitions. Being a professional athlete of any kind means being on the public stage.

It is the day before a major competition and you have to give a television interview. The person from your sponsor who helps arrange interviews has given you a list of questions, so you know what to expect. The night before the interview, you sit down to look at the questions and draft some brief responses.

You won't memorize them, but you do want to get some ideas down so you appear prepared and polished. Here's what you'll be asked.

  1. How did you become interested in surfing, and when did you know you would become a professional?
  2. You've had an up and down career as a surfer, with several big wins and some long stretches where you finished lower in the standings. How have you kept going through those times?
  3. You are a favorite to win tomorrow. What do you think your chances are?
  4. Surfing is enjoying a bit of a revival today in the sports world. Do you think it will continue?

Remember to include your own personality and flair with each answer.
