Maintaining a certain weight and counting calories are part of a model's livelihood. You don't necessarily have to maintain a specific weight, but you do need a look the client wants.

You have tried different ways of counting calories over the years, but have found that by using the following basal metabolic rate (BMR) formula, you have been able to sustain a stable weight.

You can accurately figure out your body's energy expenditure by using a formula called the basal metabolic rate (BMR). That will tell you how many calories you should consume in a day to maintain your body weight.

Women:
BMR = 655 + (9.6 x weight in kg) + (1.8 x height in cm) - (4.7 x age in years)

Men:
BMR = 66 + (13.7 x weight in kg) + (5 x height in cm) - (6.8 x age in years)

Notice that these equations call for metric values.

You have a 25-year-old woman who is 5'5". How many calories would she be allowed each day to maintain a weight of 120 pounds?

How many calories would a 25-year-old man who is 6 feet tall be allowed to maintain a weight of 160 pounds?

Remember:
1 inch = 2.54 cm
1 pound = 0.4536 kg
