Real-Life Math

Math is a crucial skill in the drycleaning business. "You have to know your way around the cash register if you're going to be working with customers," says drycleaner Tracy Wong.

You're working at the front counter of a drycleaning shop. A customer comes in to pick up the garment he has had cleaned. You hand him his things and start keying his order into the computer.

Just as you total up the amount this customer owes for his drycleaning, the screen on your computerized till goes blank. You fiddle with it for a few seconds, but then decide to add this customer's order yourself, so he can get on with his day as quickly at possible.

The customer's order included:

1 down quilt - $28
1 suit - $23
4 dress shirts - $8 each

There is also a seven percent state tax and a seven percent national tax on drycleaning. Add all of these sums together and come up with the total as quickly as possible. Remember, the customer is waiting.
