Real-Life Math

Working outside all day doesn't mean that you can escape math. Small farm owners use math all the time to ensure their farms remain financially viable.

"Unfortunately, farming is not the most profitable of all businesses, which means that your margins are pretty small," says sheep farmer Craig Rogers.

"If you don't have a handle on what your expenses are, and you don't know what all of your costs are, it's going to be hard for you to ensure that you're getting a price that allows you to be able to survive and care for your family and be able to buy the tractor, or be able to get something fixed when it's broken."

Imagine that you're a sheep farmer like Rogers. Every day, your sheep eat hay as well as feed. You need to calculate how long your hay and feed will last.

You have 700 pounds of feed in your bulk feeder and 6,000 pounds of hay in the field. You have 150 sheep. Each sheep eats half a pound of feed per day and 7 pounds of hay per day.

  1. How long will the feed last?
  2. How long will the hay last?
