Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You take the extra 15 minutes to trace the outside wires.

You realize that you should personally inspect every error first-hand. You go outside to discover a group of painters putting a new coat of paint on your satellite radome. A radome is a thin sheet-like cover that is used to cover a secret dish.

You quickly discover that the paint is lead-based, and the painters have covered the holes in the radome with this paint. The lead is blocking the information from passing through to the dish and to the computer system.

It pays to be thorough and not take any shortcuts when trying to solve a computer system failure. Even something as insignificant as checking what is going on outdoors can be crucial.

"The biggest temptation is to take shortcuts, but they usually cost in the end," says Broderick Wood, senior systems analyst. "You also have access to a lot of sensitive information and need to ensure appropriate precautions are taken."
