You're a technical writer for a small technical communications consulting firm. The firm specializes in providing "all-inclusive" service to its clients, handling everything from the research and writing to the design and publishing of product manuals and reports.

You've just completed writing and designing the new 36-page user manual for a small software company's new line of software. Now, it's just a matter of getting the stamp of approval from the company and sending it off to the printers.

You give the sample manual to the company president for approval. Because it's a small company, and budgeting has been a big consideration, you also include the cost per manual to date. With the expense of labor for 2 people researching and writing for 3 and a half weeks, the manuals have already cost the company approximately $18.50 a piece.

"Great job!" they tell you. "But we've only got a budget of $21 per manual. Will we make it on budget?"

You pull out a pencil and paper and get to work. You know the cost of the artwork for the cover is $129. You also know the printing and binding cost for the saddle-stitched formatted directory manual you have in mind is $495.

Given that this company needs 300 manuals, how much will the cover art and printing and binding (production) expenses be for each booklet? What is the total cost of each manual, including labor expenses to date? Will your technical writing company be able to produce the manuals on budget?
