Real-Life Math -- Solution

What is the total cost of the part?

Cost: $35

Tax: 0.06 percent

$35 x 0.06 = $2.10 tax

$2.10 + $35 = $37.10 total for the part
The part will cost $37.10.

The customer gives you a $100 bill. How much is the change?

$100 - $37.10 = $62.90.

You give him $62.90 back.

Barry Reppnack is the owner of an auto salvage shop. He says that he's noticed some younger workers are lacking basic mathematics skills. He recently had a situation where a young man he had just hired to work at the counter could not figure out how much change to give back after a customer gave him a $100 bill.

"He was dumbfounded; he was looking for a calculator. So I said, 'Look this is how you count change ... count upwards.' And he was amazed, like how did you learn that?" says Reppnack. "With the young generation using computers all their life, they've never had to do that."
