Real-Life Decision Making

Astronauts are highly trained in many areas: math, science, communication and teamwork. But given the sensitive, dangerous nature of their work, their ability to make quick decisions may be the most important skill they have.

You are an astronaut leading a space shuttle mission to retrieve an astronaut who has been aboard the international space station for four months.

Your mission has been trouble-free to this point, but as you begin the procedures to prepare for docking with the station, you notice a problem: the door hatch that will connect the two spacecraft is showing signs of malfunction. There is a one in five chance that the door will not close properly once opened.

Your mission is planned to the minute, so you have only seconds to make a decision. Should you carry out your docking mission or take a different approach?

What do you do?
