Additional Information
In some areas, mobile home installers must be licensed and bonded. In
order to be licensed, you need on-the-job experience combined with a short
training program, says industry consultant George Porter. Experience could
include working on a crew for six months or setting up 50 homes.
Porter develops and teaches installation programs in 11 states. "The courses
cover how to check it out, safety precautions, the basic principles of what
you have to do to get the job done," he says.
If you want to get started in the industry, walk up to somebody doing it
and ask if they need help, says Porter. Call the state associations. Go to
a dealer and ask for a job.
"Be prepared to start on the bottom. How you apply yourself will determine
your future," says Porter.
In high school, take industrial arts, math, English and machine shop.
