Racetrack designers usually have a background in civil or environmental engineering. Architects are involved in the design of the grandstands and other associated buildings. "There is no Racetrack Design 101 that you can take," says racetrack designer Ed Bargy.

Civil engineering programs are available at universities and colleges across the country. It is also helpful to have a good understanding of motorsports, along with good communications skills, business skills and computer skills.
