You must have excellent communication skills if you want to become a milliner, says Wayne Wichern. He is a milliner. "It's essential when you are dealing with clients," he says. "Lots of people can tell you what they don't like. But it is up to you to figure out what they like."

That means a milliner has to ask a lot of questions about the type of hat a client wants and about the occasion where the client will wear it. Otherwise, there is a good chance that the finished hat will look nothing like the hat the client had in mind.

A milliner must also be able to make clear and precise suggestions that help a client make a decision.

You are a milliner. A client wants you to make a hat for her son's wedding. But she is not sure what she wants. Come up with a list of questions that will help you to find out what she wants. Consider design, color and dress compatibility as you come up with your questions. Avoid questions that one can answer with one single "yes" or "no."
