Occupational therapists spend a lot of time determining if a patient's motor skills, body strength and other functions fall within the normal range after an accident or trauma. They give certain physical tests to measure the patient's strength. They then compare results with the normal ranges for a person of the same age and sex.

You have a patient with damage to his hand. He was involved in an accident. Some major tendons stretching from his arm and wrist to his finger were severed. You must now determine how much gripping strength he has left in his hand. By having him perform several tests that determine his gripping strength, you are able to calculate his ability to grip.

a. After doing several tests, you determine that his grip statistics are 38, 42 and 36. Calculate the arithmetic mean (the average) of these numbers.

b. If the norm is 40.3, what percentage, compared to the norm, did the client achieve?
