Real-Life Communication

As any editor will tell you, getting writers to hand their stories in on time is a constant problem.

You need to write a memo to e-mail out to all of your writers explaining to them that their stories need to be in on time, no exceptions. You must be firm yet friendly; you don't want to scare them off. At the same time, because people's time is short and attention spans are often shorter, you need to do this in, say, under 200 words.

"Communication skills are probably the most important thing about this job," says editor Jason Schreurs. "It's something I constantly struggle with, but each day on the job I seem to get better and better at it. Being direct, clear and concise is pretty key when you are an editor."
