Money & Outlook

Insider Info

Salaries vary. "I would say that depending on the hours someone puts in, you're looking at $18,000 to $25,000," says Keith Russell. He operates a training school in Durham, North Carolina.

Dorothy Wright owns a driving school. She says her company pays new instructors $8 per hour, with increases to $11.50.

Cynthia Willoughby is the assistant to the president of the Driving School Association of the Americas. "It's only going to get tougher to become licensed to drive," she says. "So we expect a lot of growth because there's a real need for what we do."

"I think there's a lot of consolidation going on," says Russell. "There are a lot of changes in laws in this country, some of which are very beneficial and some of which are not. Some [add to] business and some deter it for a while."
