Additional Information
Most vascular technologists currently in the field were trained on the
job, says echocardiography technologist Janel Mays. They enter the field from
another hospital position, such as nursing. However, now a few two-year professional
echocardiography programs offer training.
Kathleen Palmieri, an echocardiography technologist, says two of the better
known colleges offering these programs are Thomas Jefferson University in
Philadelphia and the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York.
"This technology takes about one year to learn," she says. "Give yourself
time and learn it correctly. You are helping to diagnose potentially very
serious conditions. It should not be taken lightly.
"Also, don't limit yourself to only echocardiography," Palmieri adds. She
says ultrasound is used on all parts of the body, from the abdomen to the
thyroid. It is a very marketable field.
The American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) certifies
echocardiography technologists. RDMS means you are a registered diagnostic
medical sonographer, while RDCS means you are a registered diagnostic cardiac
sonographer. RVT is a registered vascular technologist.
